The town of Merthyr Tydfil is located West of Gatwick airport a distance of 184 miles that would take around 3 hours and 15 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M4 and over the Severn Bridge into Wales. It is situated in the historic county of Glamorgan in Wales and has a population of 55,700 according to 2010 Statistics.

The towns history can be traced back to the Iron Age where a tribe called the Silures inhabited the area. When the Romans came during the conquest they built a network of Forts one of which is located underneath Merthyr Tydfil Football ground. By the middle ages it had developed into a small village and by the Tudor times the town started to become a site for Ironworks being close to reserves of iron ore, coal, limestone and water. Before its decline at the end of the second world war it had been one of the seats of the Industrial Revolution.

The town is located just South of the Brecon Beacons National Park and fringes the Fforest Fawr Geopark so is an ideal base for walkers and those who enjoy outdoor persuits. The National Cycle Route 8 passes through the town and The Brecon Moutain Railway is easily accessible. Other things to do include The Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Village, Vue Cinema, Cyfarthfa Castle Museum, Joseph Parry's Cottage and Gethin Woodland Park.
